As a school principal or aspiring school principal, you need to understand the basics of Human Resources Management. Human Resource Management (HRM) is the function in an organisation that focuses on the recruitment of, management of, and providing direction for the people who work in a school.

HRM deals with issues related to people, e.g. remuneration, hiring, performance management, education and training amongst others. Add to this the numerous changes in labour law, employment equity and BBBEE and it becomes obvious that principals and members of school management teams need to have a basic understanding of HRM in order to run their schools effectively and within the legislation that surrounds people management.
