Strategic Planning and Change Management

By Cathy Fry

Strategic planning is the process of reflecting on past performance, establishing future directions and deciding what will constitute success. In other words, it involves the school community considering these questions:

• Where have we been?

• Where do we want to go?

• How will we get there?

• How will we know if we have been successful?

Change management is a term used to refer to the introduction of new processes in a school, or the management of people who are experiencing change. For members of SMT’s to ensure that their strategic goals are met it is imperative that they fully understand the emotional cycle of change, how to implement change and how to overcome resistance to change.
